Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel released the February Jail and Sheriff’s Department Report that includes the top ten reasons why people were booked into the Marshall County Jail. 

The number one reason for being lodged in the jail last month was failure to appear with 38 cases.  Right behind that was operator never licensed with 31, and operating while intoxicated was third with 17 arrests. Possession of marijuana had 15 arrests and fourth on the list, rounding out the top five was possession of paraphernalia with 13 cases.  Sixth on the list is driving while suspended with 13 arrests and seventh is theft with 8 cases. Rounding out the top ten is possession of meth with 8 arrests, battery with 6 cases, and resisting law enforcement was 10th with 6 arrests.     

There was a total of 138 bookings into the jail in February with Bourbon Police making 3 arrests, Bremen Police having 10, Culver Police making 2, officers with the Indiana State Police making 15 arrests, Plymouth Police arrested 43 individuals, Community Corrections had 2 arrests and officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department made 84 arrests.

The February Jail Report had a population of 144 on March 5th.  52 inmates were sentenced and serving time.  One inmate was serving time on civil charges, 11 were serving time for misdemeanor charges and 41 were serving time with felony charges. 83 inmates were in the county jail for pre-trial and 8 were awaiting arraignment.  Of the 144 inmates, 126 were males and 18 were females.

Looking at the average population, the February 2024 average was 155 while 6 months earlier it was 166, and just one year ago in February 2023 the average population was 116.

Officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department investigated 70 property damage accidents in February, 5 personal injury accidents, and 1 fatal accident. Officers issued 139 warnings or citations last month, conducted 16 security checks, and handled 75 case reports.

There are currently 1,360 active warrants to be served.

The Central Dispatch Center received a total of 3,546 calls with 1,019 being 911 calls.  99.21% of those 911 calls were answered within 10 seconds or less.  There were also 1,115 calls for the Sheriff’s Department in February.
