Communities in Marshall County are offering Cooling Centers for those who don’t have air conditioning.
Confirmed cooling centers available this week are the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. They will have their lobby open.
If you live in Plymouth, the Webster Center can be used as a cooling center if needed. You are asked to call the Plymouth Parks Department at 574-936-2876 and they will unlock the facility for you.
The Argos municipal building will be open daily between 8 am and 4 pm.
In Bremen, they will have their municipal building and police department open. The municipal building will only be open between 7:30 am to 4:30 pm but the police department is open 24/7.
Limit your time outside and check on loved ones who may be vulnerable to heat.
The National Weather Service says dangerously hot conditions with heat index values between 95 and 105 are expected throughout the week. Low temperatures will be in the 70s at night and will provide little relief from the heat.
The extreme heat and humidity is expected to last until 8 p.m. on Friday and will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activitie
With the extreme heat, there is a chance that clouds linger from an overnight chance for showers and storms and this could cut into how high heat indices get on Tuesday. However, should clouds scatter out, heat indices could rapidly rise quickly. Heat stress increases with the number of consecutive hot days. Hot
conditions are forecast for the next five days. The effects of heat are most impactful for more vulnerable urban populations.
The National Weather Service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun, and checking up on relatives and neighbors.
Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
